The curry herb, originally from the Mediterranean region, enchants us with a very pleasant smell of flowers, which immediately reminds us of the finest oriental dishes. The curry aroma of this plant even exudes a hint of sage. Incidentally, this smell is particularly noticeable, especially in light rainy weather.
Curry herb has not only been known as a spice for many centuries, but is also used as a medicinal plant for coughing. On top of that, you can also process dried curry herb in small scented pillows.
Cultivation of the curry herb
At the beginning of the year (around the end of January) you can spread the seeds of the curry herb in small pots on the windowsill. The room temperature should then always be around 21 degrees. After the ice saints you can then bring the delicate plants outdoors.
You can get your own seeds from the faded flowers at any time in autumn!
The curry plant grows up to 100 centimeters, especially in a very sunny, dry location.
If you like it a little smaller, you can also use smaller varieties. Dwarf curry shrubs that are only half the size are offered in specialist shops.
Caring for the curry herb properly
From June to August, the curry bush develops its typical yellow flowers, which form a great contrast to the silver-green leaves. During long periods of heat, you should only water it moderately.
After flowering or after harvesting, it is best to always cut back your curry moderately.
In spring, a second pruning can be carried out before the fresh shoots.
In addition, the curry herb is generally not fertilized. Only the soil around older plants should be enriched with some compost in spring.
If necessary, you can also apply a little bit of complete fertilizer.
Furthermore, the curry smoke does not tolerate excessive frost - up to -10 degrees. Therefore, in winter you either have to dig it out and put it in pots (hibernate in an interior) or you protect the plant well outdoors - e.g. with jute sacks, brushwood, straw, etc.
Harvest curry herb
You should always harvest fresh curry branches (with flowers) for use in the kitchen (as a spice).
Curry herb develops the best aroma immediately before flowering!
The remaining, previously unused curry herb can then be harvested (cut off) with or without flowers and then bundled and dried overhead in an airy place. (Link tip: Preserving herbs - 5 options presented)
