Growing arugula is not an art, because this is an easy-care salad plant. The best thing to do when growing is to follow our tips.

Pre-cultivate rocket on the windowsill from January

Arugula is often associated with Italian cuisine today, especially since it is not only used as a salad, but also as a pizza ingredient.

And thanks to its slightly nutty taste, arugula (formerly also known as Salatrauke or Senfrauke) is once again very popular.

If you also love this Mediterranean salad plant, then you should simply grow arugula yourself. Fresh from the garden, the arugula tastes even better. Here are our tips on how best to proceed when growing.

Grow arugula - this is how it's done

Location selection and sowing:

Arugula is one of the annual varieties of lettuce and can be pre-cultivated on the only moderately warm window sill (approx. 10 to 20 degrees) from January. The germination time of the seeds averages around 14 days.

" Tip:

Let the arugula bloom later in the garden bed (white-yellow flower), you can harvest the seeds yourself. Then keep dry for the next sowing. The seed also spreads itself in the garden due to the flowering and often rises again as a salad plant.

Planting arugula outdoors:

From March you can then plant the rocket outdoors in a sunny location as possible. But be careful: in extreme frost temperatures, you should still protect the rocket with a garden fleece.

" Tip:

You should work the site with plenty of compost as early as autumn, as this will allow the arugula to grow even better.

When choosing a location, you also have to take into account that you always have to put arugula in a nutrient-rich place where no cabbage has found its place in advance. Because these vegetables don't harmonize with each other. Arugula would only be possible as a follow-up crop from the 3rd year of cultivation.

Caring for arugula:

The advantages of easy-care arugula are described in that the plant grows extremely quickly (harvesting possible after approx. 4 to 6 weeks) and actually does not require any additional fertilizer. And with regular watering on dry days, it also delivers a relatively high crop yield.

" Tip:

You should regularly loosen the soil around the lettuce plants with a garden rake to prevent pest infestation (e.g. by soil fleas).

Combat pests:

If you find a leaf spot disease on the arugula, you will unfortunately have to cut out the plant completely and dispose of it. This disease usually occurs when the fertilizer is applied too intensely.

The arugula can also be attacked by the cabbage fly. However, an insect net already offers sufficient protection against these pests.

Harvest arugula:

If you do not cut the leaves too deep when harvesting, the ferrous and calcium-containing arugula will sprout several times. Then you can even harvest the arugula three times.

" Tip:

If you would like to process the rocket into salad afterwards, you should remove the stalks of the rocket to avoid bitter substances or to emphasize its nutty, slightly pungent taste. Also really tasty: a pizza with rocket. Just try it and let the taste experience surprise you.

After about 2 months, you can re-sow arugula at another location, which can extend the harvest time of the fresh leafy lettuce even more. Rucola can be harvested without problems until the end of September.
