Sweet peas can be grown not only outdoors, but also on the balcony. However, you have to consider some special features here.

Sweet peas taste a little sweet

Sugar peas, also called pods, are not only fresh and crunchy, they also taste a bit sweet, as the name suggests. But that's not the only specialty: on top of that, sugar peas can also be eaten whole, i.e. with the casing.

So if sugar snap pods are supposed to come on the table, then many are scared when shopping. Sugar snap peas are not cheap. So it can be worthwhile to grow the small pods yourself. You don't even need a garden. You can also easily grow peas on the balcony. Recommended reading: Planting vegetables on the balcony - 9 types of vegetables introduced for beginners.

Instructions for growing sweet peas on the balcony

Since peas are quite sensitive to the cold, sowing from mid-April is advisable.

Step 1:

Pour a deep soil into clay pots of sufficient size or into a flower box, which consists of sand and clay in the lower area. This ensures that excess water can drain away easily. A little lime in the soil can also not hurt.

Then place the pots on the sunny side of the balcony, as they need sunlight and warmth to thrive.

Step 2:

Before you start sowing, loosen the soil in the pots or planter and make deep grooves in it.

Step 3:

In contrast to outdoor cultivation, peas can be planted in the flower box at a distance of five centimeters. This means that more plants fit side by side in a planter than in a flowerpot. You have to plant the seeds at least five centimeters deep.

Tip:

The snap peas grow faster if you soak the seeds in water for a day. This promotes germination.

Step 4:

After sowing, it is important that you water the peas every day. If the plants sprout, it is sufficient if you only water when the soil is dry.

Important:

Sugar peas grow 60 to 90 cm high depending on the variety and want to climb up on their own. Therefore a climbing aid is very important. This can consist of small wooden posts or branches. In the flower box, it is also advisable to stretch a wire cord between the individual posts.

Step 5:

The harvest can begin after about three and a half months. The right time has come when the small peas emerge from behind the pods. It is then important, however, that you process the pods immediately, as they can take on a bitter taste over time. How about e.g. with a delicious pea soup?
