When the word turf bokashi is mentioned, many don't know what it means. We are talking about a high-quality, natural fertilizer that you can easily produce yourself.

Never just throw away grass clippings

Lawn cuttings are underestimated by most hobby gardeners and simply disposed of in the compost or the green bin. You can use it as a fertilizer and soil conditioner. How do you ask now? Simply by making bokashi from it. Now do you understand even less than before? Then here first explains what Bokashi is.

What is Bokashi?

Bokashi is Japanese and means “fermented organic material”. So it is a fertilizer. However, this is much higher quality and better like mature compost. And besides, it is also not so time-consuming and complex to manufacture.

In conventional composting, the reaction is carried out with the help of oxygen. And that usually takes a long time. However, the situation is very different in the production of Bokashi. Here the organic material, in our case grass clippings, is vaccinated with EM. EM are effective microorganisms in the garden that convert the grass clippings into a high-quality and valuable fertilizer within a few weeks.

In principle, you can use almost all biological waste to make Bokashi. For example, kitchen waste. All you need is a Bokashi compost bucket:

But since most people don't know what to do with the lawn cut anyway, it is particularly useful to use it to produce a valuable fertilizer.

How does Bokashi work?

The only question that remains is what is so special about Bokashi and why it is better than compost. Quite simply: Bokashi offers a number of convincing advantages. Bokashi:

  • promotes soil health
  • stimulates root growth
  • increases the resistance of plants
  • inhibits weed growth
  • increases the quality and yield of the harvest
  • keeps snails away
  • and much more.

As you can see, Bokashi has many good advantages. So it is definitely worthwhile to apply Bokashi in the garden.

For the production of lawn bokashi you need:

  • grass clippings
  • Effective microorganisms / EM-A solution (available in garden centers)
  • water
  • dark plastic bag
  • Bucket or bin

How to make lawn bokashi

Step 1:

It is best to make the lawn bokashi in autumn. So you have a good fertilizer for spring. On a cloudy day or in the evening, lightly spray the lawn with a backpack sprayer or a spray bottle with EM-A solution (pure up to 20 ml / 1 L). Then mow the lawn and collect it with a grass catcher.

Step 2:

Now take a dark, sturdy plastic bag at hand and put it in a large bucket or in a bin. Then fill in the grass clippings, squeeze the air out of the plastic bag and then seal it airtight.

Step 3:

Now place the bucket or bin in a warm, shady place and let the Bokashi ripen for about 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, the effective microorganisms create vitamin-rich, high-quality material in the absence of air.

After the 4 to 6 weeks you can use the lawn bokashi as a mulch. In winter, for example, an approximately 3 cm thick mulch layer on the beds is good to protect them in the cold season. However, keep the lawn bokashi away from sensitive plants, because the lawn bokashi is too sharp for them.


Make sure that the sack is always airtight, then you can store the valuable bokashi in it for up to a year.
