You don't have to be a forester to work with a chainsaw. Nevertheless or precisely because of this, you have to take special care to avoid accidents.Chainsaw in use
Anyone who has a fireplace or stove knows that it is cheaper to make firewood yourself than to buy it. So a piece of forest is appropriated and the firewood production can begin. Maybe that's what you mean! But there is more to it than just buying a piece of forest. If you want to make your own firewood, you must also be able to use a chainsaw. And that doesn't just apply to owners of stoves or fireplaces, but to anyone who wants to work with the chainsaw in any way.
Certainly it may look quite simple on TV or with the forester if he works with the chainsaw - but he also learned how to use the chainsaw safely. So if you decide to do the chainsaw yourself, do yourself and your family a favor and take the time to learn how to use the machine safely. After all, the chainsaw is probably the most dangerous electrical device you can work with.
Safety rules for working with a chainsaw
Rule No. 1 - Wear protective clothing:
No matter whether you just want to cut off a branch quickly or shred a small tree stand: always wear protective clothing. This includes:
- ear protection
- Safety glasses or face shield
- Protection trousers
- safety shoes
- working gloves
If you want to prune a tree, you should also wear a hard hat. At Engelbert-Strauss, for example, you can choose the right combination for your needs from various combinations (e.g. face-ear protection combination, helmet with face & ear protection, etc.). Here you can also get all the clothes you need to work with a chainsaw.
Rule No. 2 - attend a chain saw course:
If you only work with a chainsaw at home from time to time, you need a bit of manual dexterity, but you don't need a chainsaw license. It looks different if you want to make firewood yourself in the forest. Then you have to show it and thus be able to confirm that you have mastered your chain saw reliably and that you are familiar with all safety regulations for handling the device.
Where you can take such a chainsaw course in your area, you can see e.g. via the STIHL search engine. Simply enter your postcode and possibly your street and you will be shown all STIHL and VIKING dealers in your area who offer such courses.
Rule No. 3 - Read the operating instructions of the device:
Before you put the chain saw into operation for the first time, you should read the operating instructions in peace. Each device works a little differently. So familiarize yourself with the device in peace so that nothing can go wrong later.
Rule No. 4 - Refuel your chainsaw safely:
When refueling a chainsaw, environmental and health damage has occurred very often. Therefore, you should always note that you:
- an oil binding mat (prevents oil / fuel from seeping into the ground)
- a combination canister with safety filler neck
- devices petrol
use. Then make sure that you do not smoke when refueling or do this in the vicinity of an open fire. In addition, the device should be switched off and the engine should no longer be hot.
Rule No. 5 - keep a safe distance:
When working with a chainsaw, always make sure that there are no other people around you. The safety distance should be at least two meters.
But that doesn't mean you should be all alone. It is important that people are always within walking distance so that they can provide help in an emergency.
Rule No. 6 - commission a specialist:
If you are a beginner or inexperienced, you should definitely avoid felling. It is best to get advice from the local forest service or to hire a specialist. So never overestimate your abilities and don't trust yourself too much.
