Growing grapes in your own garden is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. If you can offer a full-sun location and loose soil, then nothing stands in the way of grape harvest. If the decision has been made that grapevines will soon also decorate the garden, only one question remains to be clarified: Which grapevine varieties are there or which are suitable for growing in the garden?
You can find a huge selection of grape varieties on the market. The decision for a variety can be a bit difficult. In order to help you make the decision, we would like to present a few grape varieties that are particularly suitable for garden cultivation.
7 grape varieties for garden growing
1. “Muscat bleu” (Muscat bleu, Blue Muscat)
This variety comes from Switzerland and is one of the most popular grape varieties in private gardens. The variety is resistant to powdery mildew and can be planted either on a west or south-east wall, free-standing or as a pergola. The variety needs a full sun location, but this must be protected from wind.
The leaves turn yellow in autumn, the bloom resistance is only mediocre. Grapes are formed at the earliest from the second year onwards, sometimes only in the third year. In high summer, the vine produces blue, sweet berries. The nutmeg bleu is very poor in seeds and the shell is nice and strong, so that wasps do not have it so easy with this variety. This variety was originally intended for winemaking, but is also a good plant for table grapes. This grape variety is very vigorous and also robust and is particularly suitable for walls that are oriented to the west or southeast. Not only can you place them on walls or walls, you can also plant them free-standing. As far as the soil is concerned, the Phoenix grape variety is undemanding. It delivers high yields, is flowering resistant and is not susceptible to fungal diseases.
The leaves take on a beautiful yellow color in autumn and from the second or third year of standing you can count on the first grapes. The growth of the grapes is very compact, so you have to be careful not to push each other too much. There are a lot of fruits, which is why you have to be careful when setting up the trellis so that the load does not become too great.
The berries have a sweet taste with a muscat flavor and few seeds. You can harvest the grapes around early September. If the weather is very humid, you should harvest earlier, otherwise the berries could burst and rot.
3. “Birstaler Muskat” (Birchstaler Muskat)
This variety is particularly resistant to fungal diseases. Therefore, you can also grow them well in areas with predominantly wet weather, such as in northern Germany. This very high resistance to fungi also predestines it for cultivation in wine-growing regions, where powdery mildew is very common. This good quality also allows the grapes to be cultivated under a film tent or under glass. The high flowering strength is also convincing - Birstaler Muskat is therefore also suitable for less protected areas.
If the berries are ripe from the end of September, you can leave them on the vine for a long time. From the third year at the latest, loose grapes are formed, which can be very large. The yield of yellow, medium-sized berries is then very high. The low-core fruits taste nice and sweet and have a fine muscat flavor. To promote ripeness, you should thin out the plants immediately after flowering, so that there are only one or two grapes per shoot.
This variety is originally a vine. However, it is also conditionally suitable as a table grape. It is best to place the plant on a west or southeast facing house wall in the blazing sun. The vine is medium vigorous but very robust. It defies powdery mildew, but is susceptible to downy mildew. The flowering strength is mediocre, but it is very resistant to frost because the berries are quite small. In autumn, the foliage turns red.
You should provide the plants with plenty of water, because then the fruits will become a little bigger. These usually appear from the second to third year of life. The blue berries, which can be harvested around mid-September, then have a fruity-sweet taste and a thick skin.
The Palatina variety is a very fungus-resistant and vigorous table grape. It is suitable for a sunny wall to the west to the southeast, but also for single pole training or for planting fences or pergolas. It is very robust and convinces with its good bloom resistance and beautiful fruits.
From the second or third year onwards, it produces medium-sized grapes. The green-yellow berries with a slight hint of red have a full sweet, fruity taste and are low in seeds. With this grape variety you can usually expect a regular, high yield. Harvesting is possible from the beginning of September. You can still leave the grapes hanging on the vine for another three weeks.
This variety is a Hungarian variety that ripens late and produces very large berries. The location should be in full sun and well protected, a south to west wall would be ideal. For free standing, it is only suitable in sheltered, full sun places and a maximum height of 150 m above sea level.
The berries ripen very late, so you hardly have to worry about a wasp approach. From the second or third year of standing, the very large grapes appear with a length of up to 30 cm. The yellow-green, low-seed berries are sour-sweet to fully sweet and improve their taste even during ripening. Maturity is only reached between mid-September and November.
You should let the fruits ripen fully. Pre-harvesting or thinning may also be necessary, as this is the only way for the remaining grapes to ripen optimally. In the first few years, the fruit set can also be so enormous that you have to thin out the vines to reduce the load on the plants. Additional watering may also be necessary in early summer.
As the ripening starts very late, the plants are susceptible to sunburn and wilted berries, especially at high temperatures. If you want to defoliate the grape zone a little, this should not be done before late summer and then in several stages. As of August, you should no longer water the plants, otherwise the berries could burst.
The mushroom-tolerant variety Esther also comes from Hungary. It can also be grown in less than ideal locations because the fruits are ripe relatively early. Since this variety tends to trickle, you should choose a location sheltered from the wind. This grape variety is medium vigorous, but very frost hardy.
The dark blue berries are almost seedless and have a particularly mild taste. However, this can lead to wasps happily attacking the berries. The grapes appear from the second or third year. The harvest is usually possible from the end of August. In autumn, by the way, the leaves turn intensely red.
Important: do not propagate protected varieties further
There are some grape varieties that are protected and therefore must not be propagated. From our listed varieties, these include: Phoenix, Birstaler Muskat, Palatina, Theresa and Esther.
