The pumpkin has made a real comeback in the kitchen in recent years. Above all, the pumpkin soup is now more popular than ever. No wonder that many are now growing pumpkins themselves. This is not really difficult and is also very profitable. Sometimes it can even happen that the harvest is so abundant that you cannot always process and prepare the entire vegetable straight away. It is good to know that pumpkins can be stored well for a while if you observe a few important points.

This is how pumpkins are stored properly

➤ Preparation for storage:

It is important for storage that the pumpkins are healthy and intact. After the pumpkin harvest, you should first check it for damage. The stem must definitely stay on. However, you should shorten it to about an inch after harvesting. On the other hand, you must not wash off the skin of the pumpkins!

It is also very important for the storage that the pumpkins are ripe. The large varieties in particular should be left to mature completely in a warm place for around two weeks after harvesting. The shell should then be so hard that you can no longer carve it in with your fingernail.


If a pumpkin is already cut, you should wrap it in foil. Then you can store it in the fridge for two more days.

➤ Storage temperature:

First of all, pumpkins need a cool storage place. The ideal storage temperature is between 10 and 14 degrees. So you can keep the vegetables for a few months, some copies even up to eight months.

➤ Storage location:

Pumpkins must not only be kept cool, but also dry and with adequate ventilation. The cellar or a cool storage room is therefore the best option for storage. It would be ideal if you could hang the pumpkins airily in a net, because they can even last all winter.


If it is not so warm at one point in the house, you can also use the squash for decoration until it is consumed.

Our tip: freeze pumpkins

If you have no way to optimally store all the pumpkins, you should cut them into slices, blanch them briefly and then freeze them. If you want to process the pumpkin pieces into a soup later, you can mash them before freezing and then freeze the whole thing as a sauce.

Incidentally, the pumpkin does not lose its valuable ingredients during storage. This makes it an important supplier of vitamins and nutrients in winter.
