Potatoes must be stored in the dark

You can serve them as a side dish or you can conjure up a complete dish from them. Whether potato salad, potato pancakes (grated cake) or potato soup - there is actually something for every taste.

But now it is the case that potatoes are a bit demanding when it comes to storage. We used to put them (especially those who grew potatoes themselves) in the potato cellar and the topic was done. But who still has a potato cellar today? So another solution has to be found. In principle, it's not that difficult to properly store potatoes. You should only follow the tips below, then your potatoes will stay fresh for a long time. Incidentally, this applies to all types of potatoes.

Tips for the correct storage of potatoes

➤ Tip 1 - optimal storage temperature:

Potatoes need a cool place, but they don't belong in the fridge. If the temperatures are higher than 10 degrees, the tubers germinate quickly. The moisture is also lost, causing them to shrink. It shouldn't be colder than 4 degrees either, because then the starch is converted into sugar and the taste of the potatoes changes unpleasantly.

The optimal temperature for storing potatoes is between 4 and 8 degrees Celsius. If there really is no other way, you can exceptionally store potatoes in the fridge for a short time.

➤ Tip 2 - choose dark room for storage:

In addition to the ideal temperature, the room must also be dark and dry. Potatoes can rot or mold very quickly when it is damp. Solanine also forms when the potatoes get too much light, which leads to a green discoloration. This substance is toxic and can lead to health problems such as diarrhea and nausea.

You should always store your potatoes in a dark and cool room. This is probably the best place to go in the basement.

➤ Tip 3 - keep potatoes in a burlap sack / in a wooden box:

It is best to keep potatoes in a linen bag after harvest or after purchase. Alternatively, wooden boxes or a wicker basket go. In any case, air must come to the tubers. Plastic containers are therefore unsuitable for storage.

If you now choose a wooden box, you should cover the floor with some newsprint beforehand. Then keep the potatoes spread out as much as possible because they get pressure marks very quickly when they lie on top of each other.

➤ Tip 4 - This must not be stored next to potatoes:

Under no circumstances should you store pears, apples and plums directly next to the potatoes. These fruits secrete a gas called ethylene, which ensures that the potatoes can ripen and even spoil more quickly.

The same also applies to bananas and peaches, but you will certainly not have so many of them that you have to store them in the basement.

➤ Tip 5 - Check potatoes regularly:

In between, you should also check the potatoes from time to time to quickly remove any rotten vegetables. This is important because the rot can otherwise spread to other tubers.

However, if you discover germinating potatoes, you should sort them out and use them up as quickly as possible.
