As the name suggests, this carnation grows in the heath. You can also plant the heather in the garden. We explain how it works.

Heather Carnation - Flower of the Year 2012

The wild pink carnation blooming in its wild form has been named “Flower of the Year 2012” by the Nature Conservation Foundation, which should give it very special attention. Why? Because the actually very robust heather in the wild is unfortunately very threatened with extinction. So do something for the protection of species and plant the heather in your garden!

The right location for the heather carnation

Hardy heather cloves do particularly well in rock gardens because they can spread out lushly as ground cover. The approximately 20 to 30 centimeters tall flower is also suitable for bedding in sunny locations. This type of flower prefers mainly acidic soils that are dry as sandy as possible and that cannot form any waterlogging.

Nowadays heather cloves are available in specialist shops in different flower colors, sometimes even with double flower shape.

Sowing the heather seed

Heidenelken seeds are either sown in a flowerpot on the window sill from February or immediately after the frosty days in the flower bed. However, it is entirely sufficient to spread the seeds as thinly as possible, as the plants quickly spread in all directions.

Due to its scarce water requirements, the heather carnation is also ideal for planting green roof areas.

Grooming heather

➥ casting:

Pagan cloves need almost no maintenance. They usually survive long periods of drought without damage. However, you should sprinkle them as early as possible in the morning on particularly hot days.

➥ Cut back:

Only when the flowers of the perennial plants have faded after a few weeks can you cut back the heather for a more beautiful garden look. Of course, there is no need to prune for annual heather cloves.

If you do not prune faded heather cloves, the seeds that are formed can ensure fresh growth in the coming spring!

➥ propagation:

You can multiply heather cloves in spring by dividing the perennials. Simply part of the perennial with a spade and plant it in another place.
