There are some plants that come with strange names. So e.g. the miracle flower. You can find out why this is called and how it is planted here.

Wonder flowers often have multi-colored flowers

Cinquefoil, spider flower, snapdragons - there are so many plants with strange names. Very popular in our gardens is e.g. also the miracle flower (Mirabilis jalapa). The special thing about the easy-care, although not winter hardy miracle flower is that you can plant it in many bright flower colors, such as with white, yellow, pink, red, sometimes even two-tone flowers. This will probably be a reason for the naming.

By the way:

The miracle flower usually sprays its wonderful fragrance over the night, whereby it smells pleasantly of oranges.

Cultivation / sowing of the miracle flower

In autumn, the miracle flower produces enough seeds that you can easily collect and dry (see harvesting seeds yourself - is that possible?). Starting in March, you can use the seeds to draw the miracle flower on the window sill. The germination time is between 1.5 and 2 weeks.

After the ice saints, you can then bring the miracle flower, which originally comes from Central America, into the field. It prefers a full sun to minimally partially shaded location, where possible protected from the wind. Although it makes few demands on the prevailing soil conditions, it loves a nutrient-rich, slightly moist soil.

Tip:

A nutrient-poor soil is best enriched with humus before planting.

Caring for the miracle flower properly

»Watering / fertilizing:

On warm days you have to water the fragrant wonder flower regularly. On the other hand, you hardly need to fertilize the flower. A fertilizer application is usually only necessary during the first growth.

»Promote flowering:

The miracle flower reaches a height of between 60 and 120 centimeters and proudly displays its abundant bloom from June to early October. However, the calyxes only open in the afternoon, which in turn was one of the reasons for their name.

Wilted flowers should be plucked regularly so that new flowers can form again as quickly as possible.

»Wintering:

The best thing to do is to plant the tubers of the miracle flower in late autumn and hibernate in a frost-free room. However, a fresh cultivation with seeds is much easier in the spring and is therefore recommended.
