A garden is a place of relaxation, where of course no water feature is missing. How about, for example, if you build a spring stone yourself? Here is a guide.

You can build a spring stone yourself

A spring stone is not just a pretty garden accessory. Because of its components, it is also perceived as a refreshing elixir of life. And no matter what size you choose the source stone - the harmony between stone and garden (plants) is decisive for how much energy emanates from this garden stone.

But not only that. Spring stones, also called whirlpool stones, are also often used by animals, which means that birds, butterflies, dragonflies, etc. form a very active line-up at the spring stone. So a source stone is really more than a garden accessory. Here you will find peace and relaxation and can also observe animals.

What you need to build a source stone:

  • Sourcestone
  • pump
  • water basin
  • Cover for the basin (e.g. grille)
  • stones or plants of different sizes
  • possibly other decorative elements

How to build a source stone yourself

Step 1 - choose material and size:

First and foremost, spring stones are made of fine marble, iridescent granite, slate that goes well with every rock garden, but also made of effective sandstone and are available in gardening shops or from modern stonemasons. With a little manual skill, you can easily create a beautiful spring stone from a local boulder.

" Tip:

The sandstones, which are available in many shades, are particularly suitable for a Mediterranean garden, especially since they can be optimally combined with terracotta pots.

Pick a beautiful stone

You can set up a source stone either as a solitary stone (monolith) or as a stacked cascade (several source stones). Of course, you have to make the decision for the respective variant depending on how much space is available in the garden.

" Tip:

Solitaire stones can be larger, even if they adorn a front yard, because they work alone. With cascades, on the other hand, you have to make sure that the watercourse formed in it (regardless of whether it is a spring basin or a waterfall) is clearly in the foreground and still forms a unit with its surroundings.

Step 2 - choose location:

A spring stone can find its place anywhere in the garden. Even rock gardens, walls, garden ponds and groups of trees can be optimally upgraded with a spring stone. Especially since he also creates completely new perspectives when playing with sunlight. And of course a spring stone can also find its place on a terrace or in a winter garden.

Choose a good location

So now choose the perfect place for your spring stone and mark it.

Step 3 - drill the hole for the pump tubing:

Mostly, source stones are already available in specialist shops with a correspondingly necessary drill hole for the pump tubing. If not, you still have to drill the stone yourself with a special stone drill or concrete stone drill on the hammer drill or order it from a stonemason on site.

Now you have to drill a hole

The size (diameter) of the borehole depends on the hose thickness of the pump used. However, the hole should not leave the hose too much play.

Step 4 - water supply:

The heart of the source stone is its water cycle, which you can guarantee with a water basin placed under it or in the immediate vicinity. With the help of a water pump, the water is always transported from the basin to the source stone and back again.

Decorate the cover e.g. with stones

You must make sure that you install the basin, the pump hose and the associated electrical installation as invisibly as possible. It is best to work with a cover for the basin, which you can then easily green up or cover with stones later.

To ensure this, it is best to dig a pit in which to place the basin. Then put a suitable cover or a grid on the basin and then place the source stone on it. It is then only important that you cover the grille nicely.
