A natural swimming pond will never be completely free of algae. Nevertheless, you should fight the algae in the swimming pond. Here are 6 tips.

A swimming pond will never be completely free of algae

In a freshly created swimming pond, increased algae formation is always to be expected at the beginning. This amount of algae in the pond can, however, be reduced significantly over the years - if you take our tips into account. The algae will never disappear completely, but with our tips the algae pollution in the swimming pond can be minimized so much that it is hardly noticeable in the end.

Algae control in the swimming pond

Tip 1 - remove nutrients from the swimming pond:

In principle, each swimming pond should be kept as low in nutrients as possible in order to curb the growth of algae from scratch. Because algae are living beings and feed on all the nutrients offered to them in the swimming pond.

For this purpose, you should subdivide your swimming pond into a regeneration area and a bathing area, which you conveniently provide with a natural gravel filter in the transition area - this allows floating particles to be optimally filtered. Of course, you can use any other biological filter system in your swimming pond instead of the natural gravel filter.

Tip 2 - Generously shade the swimming pond:

Light and warmth increase the formation of algae. Generous shading counteracts this, e.g. through sensible planting with water lilies, reed plants and similar plants.

Or you can open a shade sail for partial shading on hot days. However, trees are not recommended, since leaves often get into the swimming pond and inadvertently supply it with nutrients.

Tip 3 - Clean the swimming pond regularly:

A swimming pond should also be cleaned regularly with a mud vacuum, at least 2 to 3 times a year, and more often if necessary. For this purpose, you can also borrow high-performance sludge vacuums from specialist dealers.

Tip 4 - plant the swimming pond correctly:

Numerous plants are available today in the garden center, which easily withdraw nutrients from a swimming pond. These include cattail, calamus and pike herb.

In this context, you have to make sure that you only use as much phosphate-free fertilizer as possible with swimming pond plants and that they only settle in the regeneration area of your pond. Before you create a swimming pond, it is best to make a plan where you plant which pond plants.

Tip 5 - avoid cracking in the swimming pond:

Algae like to settle even in the smallest cracks in a swimming pond, which is why you have to take care to either avoid cracks completely (e.g. in masonry stones) or to clean existing cracks more often.

Tip 6 - use effective microorganisms:

Effective microorganisms (e.g. available from Amazon) combat algae formation in the swimming pond in a biological way. This type of pond care can even be used without problems with fish stocking.
